First Skateboard

Who remembers getting their first skateboard as a child? I do, I was around 12 years old in the mid 80s. I spent one summer cutting grass and doing other yard work throughout my neighborhood just to save enough money to buy my first skateboard. At that time, I could only afford a cheap skateboard from a retail store called “Children’s Palace”. Yep, anybody remember Children’s Palace? Back in the day, it was considered the Toys R Us of my town. The board I purchased was an 80s Variflex complete skateboard. The graphics of the board was very basic with just the printed name “Variflex” and neon green splashed lines on the back. Needless to say, I was a very happy kid!

It’s now been well over 30 years since I last truly spent time street skating. The last time I skateboarded, I was around 18 and skating my favorite board at the time, G&S Neil Blender with one Independent Truck, one Gull Wing Truck, and Vision Blurr Wheels. Till this day, I still have my Neil Blender complete skateboard setup.

Are you lucky enough to still own any of your childhood or teenage year skateboards? A quick check on Ebay shows that the popularity of 80s style skateboards are on the rise. Maybe, after reading this page, you will be inspired to locate and purchase the skateboard you had or desired as a child or teenager.

Motto

The motto I live by is that it’s never too late to start something new or re-visit an old passion in life. With that said, I have decided to get back into skateboarding. This time, I will be focusing and learning to ride vert (half pipe and bowl). Who’s with me and have also thought about or are ready to get started back into skateboarding?

The plan is to use this skateboarding blog to provide tips & motivation to those wanting to get back into skating or learn how to skateboard as a beginner adult.
